Local Risk Profile
Jessup is a borough in Lackawanna County, settled in 1849 and named for Judge William Jessup. It was presented to the Luzerne County Court for incorporation as the Borough of Winton in December 1876, two years before Lackawanna County itself was created, and grew rapidly in the early 1890s as new anthracite mining operations opened and drew immigrants from Europe to the coal fields. The borough covers about six and three-quarter square miles and, since a 1969 merger with Archbald and Blakely, is served by the Valley View School District.
